MASC March/April Bulletin
March&April 2009
Melksham Swordfish ASC / Easter Bulletin
Masc celebrating 50 years logo competition.
Extended entry date
Last entry date 10th April.
Easter Closures: There will be no swimming sessions on Good Friday (10th April) Easter Saturday (11th April) or Easter Monday (13th April). Normal sessions will resume after Easter weekend.
Wiltshire County Championships success: Four swimmers participated in this year Championships. Firstly Max B-B (14) & Lily Bridges (12) competed in the 1500m event held on March 21st at Bath University. Both completed the course earning good PB times.
Jamie Collings (13) & Theo White (10) both swam the 50 f/c at Swindon Link on 28th March. Both boys got good PB’s with Jamie also claiming a silver medal. Theo was competing in his first major gala & was a genuine sporting superstar. Well done to all four competitors.
Next year we hope to have many more swimmers qualifying & attending. County qualifying times are gained at our annual club championships and licensed Open Meets.
Open Water: Max B-B & Lily Bridges competed in the 3km competition on 28th March. Both finished the competition with good times, Lily 48min an excellent PB from last years 3k and Max 50min, particular credit to Max who was struggling with a very painful elbow. They now go on to compete in an Open Water lake swim 15th July at the Cotswold Water Park.
Congratulations to Max & Lily.
Anyone interested in trying open water distance swimming please contact Rob Bridges, Chairman.
Competition & Membership Secretary Vacancies: It is imperative that people come forward to fill these vacancies prior to our October AGM.
The Membership Secretary is responsible for enrolment of new members, the upkeep of member records & and making sure there is an updated door register at the desk every month. The majority of this is done on computer. Maria, who currently holds the post, will continue to be ASA Officer, which lessens the task. She will give full training to her replacement. Please contact mariab-b@blueyonder.co.uk for info.
Competition Secretary involves entering swimmers in Open Meets and Wilts County Championships (details are sent through from event organisers). This is mainly done on computer. Again it is vital that this role is filled or it will mean that any of our budding Olympians will be unable to compete. Please contact Ian on ian.julie2@btinternet.com for further information.
These two positions are committee positions. Meeting is held every 4 weeks.
We cannot stress enough how vital it is for people to come forward and help in the running of the club. For many years it has been down to the same people & now their children have grown up & moved on obviously its time for the parents to do the same. Without further help & the vacant positions being filled the club will be unable to function effectively. Please help in any way you can – even if it is with the setting up & putting away of lane ropes it is greatly appreciated.
Southern Junior League Round 1 - 18th April 2009 - Destination Hutton Moor, Weston Super-Mare. The team list & travel details are now up on the notice board. Please mark whether swimmers selected are available or not ASAP. Any queries please see Julie or Tracey. Coach transport is available primarily for swimmers/poolside, with any remaining seats available for parents on a first come basis. Seats must be registered & paid for in advance at the club desk to reserve. SJL round 2 - 16May / SJL Final 20/6.
Poolside Seating: In response to parental request MASC committee have donated further white poolside chairs to Melksham Blue Pool (DC Leisure) to increase the spectator seating during all swimming sessions. Hopefully this will now improve the seat capacity.
Good Luck Wishes: We are aware that several of our swimmers are soon to be taking GCSE and A level exams. Best of Luck to them all.
Sponsorship? If any of you out there are interested or know someone who may be interested in sponsoring the club in any way please contact Rob Bridges or Mark Stevenson. We are welcoming sponsors on any level for our 50th Anniversary celebrations – which will be heavily publicised and also our annual Club Championships.
Club Kit: Anyone wanting to order club hoodies now needs to contact Mark Stevenson direct on mstevo15@hotmail.com to order. The cost of hoodies is £18 - they have proved extremely hard wearing & good value. This includes one name embroidered with the club logo. Further writing can be added for a further charge. Club costumes, kit bags, hats, T-shirts etc are kept in stock.
Fond Farewell: After many years of teaching with MASC Liz Dimond is now stepping back from poolside duties.
She has long been one of the figureheads for the club and has dedicated many, many voluntary hours to the swimmers and the running of the club.
We would like to pass on heartfelt thanks to Liz on behalf of the members of MASC for all the invaluable effort she has put into the club. We hope that Liz will still keep in touch & wish her all the best for the future.
